An old customer recently came into our tyre depot in Halifax, Yorkshire, UK. Fred as we will call him. Bought a second hand car from a lady whos husband had recently passed away. The car had been stood in a garage for a few years. Consequently, the car was in good condition. The mileage was 47000 and the car was a Vauxhall Vectra.
The vectra was in immaculate condition. However, Fred only wanted the tyres checking. The car had two makes of tyres fitted. Accordingly, two were Michelin zx and the other two were both BF Goodrich. The tyres had tell tale “cracking”. Hence, on the bead and shoulder area of the tyres. Cracking is a tell tale sign of aging tyres?

It’s time to consider getting winter tyres when winter arrives in Halifax, particularly if you drive an SUV. It is an inevitability that the weather in the north will bring slippery roads, rainy conditions, and even snow.

Keeping you and your family safe-Dunlop SP Winter Sport 5 Tyres

Of course is more important than simply going from point A to point B in comfort while driving an SUV with the proper tyres. For this reason, I strongly advise installing the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 5 SUV tyres.

These tyres are perfect for the SUVs that many of us drive around here because they are made especially to handle the difficulties that come with driving in the UK during the winter.

The Dunlop SP Winter Sport 5 SUV is a good choice. Let’s explore a few of the main advantages. To begin with, these tyres offer improved performance on snow-covered roads, which is precisely what we require when conditions become a little dicey.

Dunlop has improved the tyre’s shape-Dunlop SP Winter Sport 5 Tyres

Especially, to increase block rigidity, which improves grip and evens out pressure distribution. This provides you with the much-needed stability and control when driving in snowy conditions, whether you’re travelling to the Pennines or the hills around Halifax.

Their aquaplaning defence is another outstanding feature. This is a game-changer when it comes to handling slick and wet roads, which is something we frequently encounter.

The tyre’s shape enhances the amount of water it can dissipate, helping to reduce the risk of that dreaded loss of control when navigating through slushy spots or puddles. In essence, you’re gaining greater assurance that, come rain or snowmelt, your SUV will remain responsive and planted.

The Dunlop SP Winter Sport 5 SUV’s ultimate lateral grip on slick surfaces is one of its best qualities. The tyre’s centre sipes, which are tiny slots, are intended to run parallel to the block edges.

What does this signify? Dunlop SP Winter Sport 5 Tyres

The sipes are longer and more effective at spreading apart and clinging to the pavement. Thus, these tyres offer you greater control over all types of terrain, including icy roads and the initial layer of frost in the morning, particularly while traversing hard turns or corners.

Furthermore, it goes beyond safety. There is financial gain as well. The increased fuel efficiency that the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 5 SUV tyres are intended to provide.

Because the weight distribution has been optimised, your tyres will roll more smoothly and use less fuel. It’s important to keep in mind the expense of fuel these days when making plans for the winter!

Why, then, is this so crucial to Halifax? Here, winter consists of more than simply a few chilly mornings; it brings with it freezing rain and sporadic heavy snowfall.

Dunlop SP Winter Sport 5 Tyres

Being unprepared is the last thing you want during the winter. When the temperature drops, regular tyres just won’t work, especially if you’re driving a bigger car like an SUV. You’ll be ready for everything the northern weather throws at you if you fit winter tyres like the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 5 SUV.

It’s not only about safety, though; Dunlop SP Winter Sport 5 Tyres

Whether it’s for a daily commute or a trip to the countryside, you’ll also feel more confident navigating treacherous winter roads thanks to the increased grip and handling.

For anyone who lives in this region of the world, investing in winter tyres is only a wise choice.

We at Pellon Autocentre are prepared to assist you in making the transition, and for your SUV this winter, I would strongly advise looking into the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 5. Be cautious, be organised, and let’s get your car ready for winter!

Winter Tyres 2024

Eric Roberts says, getting your winter tyres in order is something that most drivers in Halifax need to start thinking about as the colder months draw near. The harshness of the northern winter is well known.

Not only do the temperatures drop, but the state of the roads also does. Suddenly, you’re dealing with slippery, wet, and occasionally snowy surfaces that challenge standard tyres. However, why hold off till that first frosty morning when you’re left stumbling across the streets?

Winter tyres are made for conditions-Winter Tyres 2024

So when the temperature drops below 7°C, they’re more than simply a gimmick or an extra consideration. In the summer, that’s not a concern for us, but by November, we’re lucky if we see anything above that!

In contrast to conventional tyres, which harden and lose their stickiness in the cold, winter tyres have a tread design that provides increased traction. Thus, you’re taking a lot more risk than just wear and tear if you drive around on regular tyres.

Let’s face it, Halifax and its environs aren’t immune to the occasional snowstorm or ice patch, and they usually happen when you least expect them. Driving in the winter can present some challenges, from traversing the Pennines to navigating the town’s narrow streets.

You never know when a casual trip to the neighbourhood store may turn into a snowy rally stage experience. I promise you that switching to winter tyres from ordinary tyres is like night and day.

You’re not only increasing your personal safety -Winter Tyres 2024

But also reducing the amount of stress that other drivers experience because nobody likes to be stuck behind a car that is having trouble going up the hill at Pellon!

Let’s now discuss what I suggest, which are Falken tyres. They have a strong track record of providing high-quality products at reasonable prices, and their winter tyre selection is no exception.

Falken is a top option for my consumers because of its ability to mix performance, price, and durability. They are renowned for having excellent traction in snowy and rainy conditions—exactly what we need up here.

There’s a myth as well that winter tyres are just useful in the snow, but remember that we get plenty of rain up in Yorkshire.

Winter Tyres 2024
Winter Tyres 2024
Compared to your summer tyres,-Winter Tyres 2024

Of course, the braking distance is much shorter, and you’re less likely to aquaplane thanks to the exceptional water dispersion capabilities of the Falken winter tyres.

One more thing: buying winter tyres is an investment in long-term financial health as well as safety.

By installing winter tyres,

Happily, you extend the life of your regular tyres by protecting them from the elements throughout the colder months. Additionally, many insurance companies view installing winter tyres favourably, which could result in lower rates for you.

Whether you need help choosing the right tyres for your car or need them fitted before the first frost, Pellon Autocentre is here to support you in making the transition. Avoid waiting until the temperature lowers and you find yourself stuck on the snow covered roads.

Peace of mind is one of the best benefits of installing winter tyres early. You won’t be unprepared for an unexpected change in the weather, which, let’s face it, could happen at any time starting in October!

The last thing you want is to discover your tyres are inadequate

when you wake up to a windscreen covered in frost. You’re not just ready for the snow and ice when you install winter tyres in advance; you’re also equipped for those chilly, rainy mornings when the roads are sloppy and unpredictable.

It also means that when the winter rush hits, you won’t have to worry about your tyres—Christmas shopping is stressful enough without adding another worry!

This winter, be ready, drive carefully, and think about adding Falken tyres to your setup. There’s a reason they have my endorsement!

A great instagraph explaining the reasons also showing the tyre markings this is well worth a look at?

Tyre-wall markings are there for the benefit of us all?

It still astounds me that 75% of drivers that come into my tyre business, do not know what size tyres they have on their cars. I also know that many of our customers do like us to check the size for them.

This applies to the lady drivers especially.
I think that it is understandable that ladies should not have to bend or kneel to check their tyre size. This applies in winter time more than anything, but we do understand this and would never let a lady have to check her own tyre size.
Male customers do have more knowledge about these things and I think it is about 50/50 of men who know their tyre size and where to find it.

It is important when ordering online that you look at the following information about your tyre size.

Our own website at www.pellontyres.co.uk has a facility for entering your car registration, but this is not always accurate, and it is best to double check it with the size of the tyres that you can find on the tyre-wall markings.

This online information is important because the internet is the best place to buy cheap car tyres.
The following information is about the 20555R16 91W tyre size, which is the most common size of tyre at the moment.

Tyre-Wall Markings

tyre- wall markings

• 205 This is the width of the tyre and is measured in millimetres

• 55 This is the “aspect ratio” of the tyres. Although it sounds complicated, it means the    height of the sidewall as a percentage of the tyre width. In this size, the aspect ratio is 55%, hence the 55.

• R Stands for radial

• 16 is the measurement of the diameter of the tyres inner rim in inches; in this case, 16 inch.

• 91 is the load rating of the tyre. This is calculated from a table issued by the tyre manufacturer and simply means the maximum weight that the tyre should carry; in the case of this tyre size, it would be 615 kilogrammes.

• W This is the speed rating of tyre. It indicates the maximum speed that the tyre should achieve when fully loaded. The W rating can go up to 168 mph and is once again available on a speed rating chart that is supplied by the tyre manufacturers.

• A more recent mark that you can see on the tyre-wall markings is “E4” This is the European type approval marking to show that this tyre has been tested to the highest standards before being sold in the European Union.
These are no doubt the most important tyre-wall markings for the regular motorist to know about. It is also important to match your original tyres to the same numbers that are on your car.

Tyre-Wall Markings

Never fit tyres that are below the speed and load ratings. Remember that tyres are tested to a very high standard, and it is important that you observe these rules.

If you have any doubts, call in to see your local tyre retailer, who will be only too pleased to help you.

Car Tyres are NOT created equally. Practical Motoring

When it comes to changing your tyres, you can’t have everything, good grip, long-lasting and cheap – not all tyres are created equal.

Source: practicalmotoring.com.au

A good article as usual from practical motoring. It is not rocket science to know that you cannot have a perfect tyre.

When customers buy cheap tyres, then they are only going to get what they pay for?

Cheap tyres will not last as long as a premium brand

such as Continental tyres. Tyre companies such as Continental have put over 100 years of technology and research and development into their products. Budget Car tyres from mainly China are made from mass production facilities, with quantity and not quality in mind.

Buying your car tyres?

Like any purchase that we make, whatever it is then there will be differences in price and quality of the product that you buy.

Buying your car tyres?

Like any purchase that we make, whatever it is then there will be differences in price and quality of the product that you buy.

Car tyres are no exception to this rule?

In general you have a choice of three different types of tyres, the Budget car tyres, the mid-range tyres and the premium car tyres. A very good point to make about choosing tyres is that there are no real grey areas.

What I mean is that when you buy say clothing, perhaps a new coat, then it is difficult to really know the quality ratio to the price that you pay. You can go to M&S a buy a new pair of trousers then you could pay a high price for something that is made in a huge factory in China.

Car tyres are more specific.

Most motorists have heard of the premium tyre manufacturers. Hence, companies such as Continental, Michelin, Avon and Goodyear. Traditionally, have all been about for well over 100 years. These car tyres will always give you top quality performance and will be long wearing.

There are diversities within this. Of course, you will always find someone who was not satisfied with their mileage or road holding. But in general the leading tyre makers make a very good product.
The premium tyre companies have put over a hundred years into research and development. So, to help create today’s excellent products. The down side is that you will have to pay more. Consequently, these car tyres are often more expensive.

Mid-range car tyres

These are the tyres that are from the up and coming tyre companies of the world, such as Kumho, Hankook, Apollo and Yokohama tyres. These tyre companies also offer an excellent product. They are relatively new tyre companies from the past 20 years and emanate from the east, South Korea and India.

These tyre companies produce a good tyre are not very far behind the premium tyre companies, both in quality and in their marketing efforts. This tyre would be the choice of the undecided motorist who are careful with their money, lady customers will very often choose a mid-range tyre.

Cheap car tyres

This is the final category before slumping to part worn tyres. These tyres are made by various tyre companies. Some are in fact made by the premium tyre companies and would be my choice if I had to buy a

budget car tyre? Michelin make a tyre called the Kormoran tyres. Which are made by the Polish tyre company Stomil Hence, which Michelin. bought/invested in a while back. The tyres are not the same as a Michelin. However, I am sure that Michelin will have had some sort of input into the product.
Other leading tyre makers make similar products and the rest are from Eastern Europe and China. These tyres will not give the mileage and comfort levels of the last two categories’?

They are though a much better choice than part worn tyres and in my own area of Halifax Yorkshire UK, are a very popular choice of tyre and worth buying if you have an older car or just tootle about town.

I hope this helps. If you are not sure which category of tyre fall into then just ask the guy in your local tyre depot.

Michelin buys Allpneus

A tyre manufacturer openly buying into an online tyre business?

In my opinion, this will change the ball game and open the door for all sorts of ducking and diving amongst tyre manufacturers and wholesalers.

Will Michelin now miss the tyre wholesales out of the equation. By going online, they are certainly missing out on the middle man? the tyre wholesalers.

Michelin buys French Online Company ALLPNUES Throw Down the Gauntlet with the 40% Acquisition

Wow I have been saying for the past two years that we in the tyre trade are living in interesting times, but this announcement is one of the most interesting stories I have yet to come across?

Michelin are going online? Michelin buys Allpneus

This will be done with a 40% acquisition of the French online tyre retailer “Allpnues”. The online tyre company sold 3 million tyres online last year, which accounts for 7% of the French tyre market.

Michelin to use ATS as the fitting stations

Michelin has also announced that they are going to use their network of ATS tyre depots to carry out their fitting work across Europe.
When I first read the story, I thought that Michelin was just going to supply France and use the French ATS depots, but they say that they will be using all the ATS depots across Europe.

Michelin buys Allpneus
Michelin Number 1

I did notice that some of the local ATS depots were not doing any truck work anymore and have been smartened up for retail, and so this has been a plan of theirs for some time.
One thing is for sure: this will kick off repercussions amongst tyre wholesalers, and there will be a big rush from the other tyre manufacturers to compete on the same lines. This effectively means that Michelin is missing out on the middle man, which at the moment are the big tyre wholesalers.

I can remember years ago when Michelin decided to go into ASDA to sell tyres. Michelin buys Allpneus

This too caused a huge rumpus and I think that it was ATS who eventually stopped the process and Michelin closed down the tyre shops within the supermarket. This time, ATS will be one of the main players and have no complaints.

I also wonder what Michelin will do with other brands that Allpnues also sells? Will they be pushing out their own product? I think so. It is a big investment to make just to sell Dunlop’s and Continentals products.

Whatever happens, it has certainly changed the game, big style? But I can’t help feeling that this is the way to go; it makes good business sense and will cut out the middle man, as I have stated earlier. It could be the start of another dot-com boom, but in the tyre industry, watch this space?

Wow this is yet another great innovation coming out of California?

I must admit that i have seen something like this in the past, but on a smaller scale, and waste tyres were left whole. These, used on a grander scale, have had the sidewalls removed.?

I guess that this makes the wall more stable that leaving the sidewalls on. On a local note, the guy who lives next door to my tyre depot in Halifax, Yorkshire, UK, did a similar thing, but did it with whole tyres. At first, it all went well but after a year, the whole thing collapsed into the valley below.

I am sure that this will not happen in California, where they will have given the problem much more thought. It looks good and saves waste (used tires)—win-WIN!

There are many new ways to use old rubber tyres-Waste tyres problem

Over the past two years,. I have been pleasantly surprised at the number of new ways that have come to my attention to use up scrap tyres at the end of their lives.
There are many things, from fashion items to garden ornaments. On a larger scale, the use of rubber pellets As a result, mix it with tarmac to build new roads and resurface old ones. It was not too long ago that the world had a gigantic problem.

So, how are the toxic old tyres to be disposed of? Waste tyres problem

But ingenious ways have moved us forward, although things are not perfect. Then we are moving in the right direction, and many great ideas have emerged. for used tyres to be re-used and recycled.
This idea used in California is no exception to the rule. The waste tyre issue is being used to construct sea walls and buffers to protect beaches and river beds. As you can see in the image,

sidewalls are removed. As a result, just leaving the centre of the waste tyres intact is sufficient. These are filled with soil and then planted, and they look really good and sturdy.
On a smaller scale People paint the old waste tyres and use them in a garden display. I was not sure about this in the first place. But my wife and I had a go, and they looked pretty good. The old tyres retain moisture and warmth, and the plants love this growing environment.

We have also been successful in growing vegetables.

in old car tyres that are stacked up in threes and fours. This is especially useful for growing potatoes because the top tyres can be removed to access the potatoes once they have grown.
Old tyres are also used to re-establish coral reefs, and it has been found that they make great hiding and breeding places for fish and molluscs, so there may be further underwater ideas to be considered for using waste tyres in the lakes and seas of the world.

It’s difficult to create a winter tyre

that can perform well in all areas. To locate the elusive sweet spot where the rubber can cut through ice and slush, find grip in all conditions, whether slick or dry, and serve up ride comfort, peace and quiet for drivers.

Of course, tyre manufacturers must juggle compound, tread design, and overall construction. Additionally, tyres must endure for a long period and not fall apart in high temperatures.

Moving on to 2022

So out of many tests the Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 came out as the overall winter tyre winner.

The Bridgestone Blizzak LM005’s sole flaws, as in previous tests, were that it wasn’t the best at dry braking and that it wasn’t quite as balanced in snow handling as some of the other tyres.

With the best grip in wet handling

and the shortest wet braking distances, the LM005 excelled in the wet grip tests. It also won the snow-braking test. Performing well in the snow traction test.

Also, had some of the lowest noise levels during the test. Astonishly, and had the lowest rolling resistance of the top tyres. A well-earned test victory for the Japanese juggernaut; congrats to Bridgestone.

This is a common problem these days. especially here in the tyre business. Many such examples have come to light in recent years. So, where are the unscrupulous. Tyre dealers have just filled old premises with waste tyres and abandoned the building.

The last one that I heard about was in Bradford

Yorkshire, UK. The city used to be a large woollen industry city. Hence, we manufacture all types of materials. Thus, from large manufacturing mills, These premises fell into disrepair when the clothing industry collapsed. When I was younger,

These old mills are now converted into housing complexes. But some are used for storage. These have been the targets of criminals. As a result, they have been receiving money for the scrap tyres and filling the old mills to the roof.

When are the mills full of waste tyres and the dishonest person just locks the doors and walks away? Leaving the problem, to the local council

The last old mill had 100,000 (one million) old tyres filling it to the rafters. WOW.

Tyre business owner filled an old Airfield?

As I have said, this type of criminal activity is nothing new. A few years ago, a new law was introduced. Importantly, to control the movement and disposal of “end-of-life” tyres. Unfortunately, a few criminally minded people set up scams. I was sucked in by these crooks.
The guy approached my depot manager, claiming to be the owner of a tyre business dealing with waste tyres, and I showed him the certificate that was required by law to remove, transport, and dispose of waste tyres.

We pay £1 each for waste tyre disposal. Therefore, if he collects 400 old tyres, Then we have to pay him £400. The tyres are then taken to a registered disposal site, where they are made into tyre crumbs and then re-used in industry.

Unknown to my manager, the certificate was fake?

The guy was found to be getting the money. But all he did with the old tyres was pile them up on an old RAF airfield in North Yorkshire, UK.

The environmental agency became suspicious when the old tyre collection began to grow and started to investigate the guy.
He was also found to be dumping the old tyres in the River Calder and burying them on an old farm. He was eventually arrested and sent for trial.

The guy went to prison for five years.

because of the giant scale of the scam.
He ended up doing this for two years and immediately started the same thing again, only this time we had nothing to do with him and he just floated off, not to be seen since.

TPMS now helping drivers with their tyre pressures

We wish to share with you the crucial TPMS Tools because TPMS sensors must be fitted on newly produced vehicles.

A TPMS Valve is an electrical device used to keep track of the tyre pressure in a car and give the driver real-time feedback on the dashboard.

Do TPMS Sensors Need to Be Used?

Beginning in 2014, all new vehicles must have a specific type of valve known as a TPMS, or “Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.”

Where can I find TPMS Valves?

There are 4 valves inside each tyre of the car, and the TPMS sensor is located just behind each valve to provide real-time air pressure, temperature, and battery level readings.

Additionally, these valves can be observed using a suitable TPMS Diagnostic Tool. To identify any difficulties that the driver may not be aware of, a garage can carry this out before aligning the wheels or changing and balancing the tyres.

Correct Tyre Pressures

When we put new tyres on our cars, everything should be fine. The correct tyre pressures and the wheel alignment will determine the way that your new tyres will wear and the amount of money that you will throw away?

What do I mean?

Well, you should keep an eye open to see if your tyres are wearing evenly or not. By “equally,” I mean wearing straight across the tread equally. The general problem is with your tyres wearing off at one edge. Either the inner edge or the outer edge Of course, this as most drivers seam to know is usually a wheel alignment problem and can be

Correct Tyre Pressures

separated with the other money waster.

Correct tyre pressures are usually spotted when it is a little too late and premature tyre wear occurs. We should, in my opinion, check and adjust our tyre pressures at least once a week, but this is often not the case, and the pressures are ignored.

What are the signs

Under inflation will wear your tyres away at the edges, and your car may not handle very well.

Over inflation will wear your tyres away in the centre, causing your car to fail to handle well, resulting in a hard ride and over steering.

These problems can be corrected by inflating your tyres at regular intervals. Even if you are unsure what to do, it is critical to have the proper tyre pressures.

Importantly, you should visit your local independent tyre dealer. They would be pleased to check that your car has the correct tyre pressure and is safe for the road.

We at Pellon Tyres in Halifax literally drop everything when a customer wants their tyre pressures correcting.

We feel that it is such an important thing to do that we attend to any customer who wants their pressure checked immediately.

Since writing this article then TPMS systems are now taking over. As a result, the task of alerting the driver to falling tyre pressures was created.

Cracked Tyres-Ozone

Cracked Tyres-Ozone

Cracked Tyres-Ozone

Cracked Tyres-Ozone

Cracked Tyres-Ozone

Ever seen old tyres, the rubber in them dried and deeply Cracked Tyres-Ozone? They were ripped apart not by the road, but by a greenhouse gas.

This is an excellent article. As a result, it highlights the risks that ozone poses to the deterioration of your tyres.

Over the many years that I have been a tyre retailer, I have found that the biggest problem with the ozone is affecting tyres. can, therefore, be seen on tyres that are exposed to the climate.

Of course, over an extended period. Hence, this includes things like tyres on farm vehicles, which are exposed to the weather for long periods of time.

Caravan and trailer tyres are also severely affected. As a result of the cracked tyre syndrome, the tyres are exposed to the elements over a period of time. Many tyre dealers will tell you about the farmer who came in with a couple of tyres. He had left it outside to be fitted onto some loose wheels.

Of course!

Ozone’s Effect on Tires: The Reason for Cracking

Over time, ozone—a type of oxygen prevalent in the atmosphere—can seriously harm tyres. Ozone reacts with the rubber compounds in tyres when it is exposed to them, particularly in urban and industrial locations where ozone levels can be higher.

The rubber becomes less elastic as a result of this reaction, and small fissures known as “ozone cracking” appear on the tyre’s surface. These cracks may shorten the tyres’ lifespan and pose a safety risk by compromising the tyres’ structural integrity.

To lessen the harmful effects of ozone, regular inspections and appropriate maintenance—such as applying tyre protectants and covering your tyres when not in use—can help keep your tyres safe and dependable.

These tyres were always riddled with cracks

in the bead area. Accordingly. This is what we call the crazy paving effect. Therefore, we had to refuse to fit them.

This was because we inflated them. They could have exploded apart, and I can remember one that did just that. The rear tractor tyre blew, lifting me ten feet into the air. Fortunately, I was unharmed, but my ears rang for days afterwards.

Cracked Tyres-Ozone

Are caravans the same? The danger is when the caravan (or trailer) has been exposed to the ozone, then the cracks around the bead area of the tyres become dangerous without the caravan owner knowing anything about them.

They then move the caravan out onto the roads and the cracked tyres, combined with heat build-up, cause the tyre to explode and in some cases, this can cause an unfortunate accident. We have all seen this, especially on bank holidays when the caravans are on the move for the first time.

To summarise, it is always a good idea to check the tyres

on trailers and caravans before hitting the road. Farmers will always be farmers, and if you fit these for them, they will just let you, as they do not like parting with their money. This article also relates to tyre pressure.

Another worrying aspect of this problem is that the cracked tyres are getting onto the used tyre market; we have seen this recently, and the fact that people are buying these worries me deeply.
