An old customer recently came into our tyre depot in Halifax, Yorkshire, UK. Fred as we will call him. Bought a second hand car from a lady whos husband had recently passed away. The car had been stood in a garage for a few years. Consequently, the car was in good condition. The mileage was 47000 and the car was a Vauxhall Vectra.
The vectra was in immaculate condition. However, Fred only wanted the tyres checking. The car had two makes of tyres fitted. Accordingly, two were Michelin zx and the other two were both BF Goodrich. The tyres had tell tale “cracking”. Hence, on the bead and shoulder area of the tyres. Cracking is a tell tale sign of aging tyres?

Winter Tyres-A Women’s guide

Not all makes of winter tyres are made to the same standards and can perform differently.

Just like any other thing in life that you buy, there are different

winter tyres
This customer is having winter tyres fitted in preperation for the bad weather

qualities at different prices.
The first point to remember is that all makes of winter tyres will give you better service in the winter months, than say summer tyres. Summer tyres are the regular tyres that are fitted to the car when the car is brand new. Even on SUV and X over cars they will be fitted with summer tyres.

Winter tyres were once thought to be a luxury and indeed in the early days of my career, we only fitted winter tyres to let’s say, the better of type of customer. I remember very clearly, when I worked for a national tyre company, the first time I had ever heard of winter tyres.

The guy was called Kenneth Knight and he owned a local newspaper shop,(everything was local in the late sixties). It was important to him because he had to collect the papers from the local train station every morning at 5 am, in winter he was probably one of the first up on the snow covered roads.

winter tyres
Firestone winter tyres similar to the ones fitted to Mr Knights car in the late 1960’s

Mr Knight owned an Austin Cambridge car and wanted to two Firestone winter tyres. This was the first time that I knew they existed and the first ones that I had ever seen.

I remember that they were special order and took two weeks to arrive at our fitting depot in Dewsbury, Yorkshire UK. When they arrived they were what I would call the old fashioned type of winter tyres with a very junky tread pattern, I also recon that these tyres would have been very noisy bit affective on wet or snowy roads.

winter tyres
Scenes like this from two year ago can remind us just how bad it gets. This was in Sowerby north of Halifax UK

This brings me back today’s driving and especially women’s cars and advice.

Back in my early days Lady Drivers were a rarity, driving the cars was a man’s job, and few women owned cars or learned to drive.

Today is a much different world and I would say that there is as many lady drivers as men. This is why I feel that it is important to educate all drivers in the benefits of fitting winter tyres to their cars before winter arrives.

Winter tyres for the SUVS and X OVERS

Winters in the UK have become more extreme in recent years, last winter 2013/2014 was extremely mild with practically no snowfall recorded here in West Yorkshire.

Across the Atlantic North America was struck by many large blizzards and had their worse snow falls on record. The truth is that none of us know what the weather will bring and so it is hugely important that we prepare our cars for what may hit us.
The first advice I would give lady drivers would be to give their cars a winter service. This would include anti-freezing their engines and additives in their windscreen bottles to stop them freezing when the first frost arrives.

Many of our customers ignore this advice and you would be surprised how many frozen cylinder heads that we get from lack of anti-freeze in the engine, costing over £1000 to repair.

The next advice is to change your summer tyres to winter tyres.

The perfect fit for your car would be to change all four, but if your money won’t stretch to that then fit two to the drive wheels. I am not going to recommend any brand names, but in my opinion it would be better to stick to mid-range brands as they are excellent quality and would be cheap tyres compared to leading brands. Pellon Tyres in Halifax stock all brands of winter tyres.
These tyres are going to help you get about during bad weather in the winter months.

We all know how important our jobs are now, and taking the children to school usually becomes a woman’s job, so safety is paramount when it comes to your family, and winter tyres will give you the edge in all types of bad weather and not just snow, although these tyres are fantastic when it comes to handling your car in snowy conditions, especially in hilly areas such as here in the West Yorkshire Pennines.
So in the coming months, you should be at least thinking about your car and your safety before the winter weather is upon us again.

Caravan tyre safety Advice

Q1: Why is it vital to select the proper tyres for my caravan?

A1: Just like choosing the ideal cup of coffee, selecting the correct tyres for your caravan is critical for a smooth voyage. The appropriate tyres improve handling, safety, and fuel efficiency. They must be strong enough to support the weight of your caravan and provide an excellent grip, particularly on rainy British days.

Q2: How frequently should I check my caravan tyres? Caravan tyre safety Advice

A2: Regular checks are essential; think of it as giving your caravan a brief ‘look over’ every now and again. It is best to check your caravan tyres at least once a month, and especially before any major journey. Look for signs of wear, cracks, or bulges. Remember that tyres can age even while not in use, just like good cheese does.

Q3: What tyre pressure is optimal for my caravan?

A3: Getting your tyre pressure exactly right is like striking the bullseye in darts. It varies depending on the weight of your caravan and the type of tyre. In general, it is slightly taller than your car’s tyre. The recommended pressure is listed in the guidebook for your caravan. Keep them adequately inflated to minimise blowouts and reduce fuel expenditures.

Q4: Can I use automobile tyres for my caravan? Caravan tyre safety Advice

A4: Putting car tyres on your caravan is similar to using tea bags to brew coffee—not quite correct. Caravan tyres are specifically built to withstand higher weights and different stresses than vehicle tyres. Always use caravan-specific tyres to ensure safety and optimal performance.

Q5: How do I know when to replace my caravan’s tyres?

A5: Knowing when to repair your trailer tyres isn’t as clear as witnessing the leaves change colour in the autumn. Even if they appear to be in fine condition, consider updating them every five years. Inspect for evidence of wear, cuts, or abnormalities. Safety first, as they say!

Q6: Do you have any advice for maintaining motorhome tyres? Caravan tyre safety Advice

A6: Think of your tyres like a well-kept lawn. Check them on a regular basis for damage or items stuck within. Keep them at the proper pressure, and while your caravan is parked for a while, protect the tyres from direct sunlight and try to move the caravan every now and then to avoid flat patches. A little TLC goes a long way!

This is an important time of year for the owners of caravans and motorhomes.

Such people look forward to their quest for tranquilly and, more importantly, freedom. Therefore, it is the time of year when the owners of these vehicles just can’t wait to free themselves from the shackles of winter.

Caravan and mobile home ownership have gone through the roof in recent times. Hence, I think that this is due to the older generation having some spare money. Due to various reasons. Pensions on retirement and the downsizing of their homes are the usual reasons.

In my opinion, it is just the sign of a successful life.

However, it is always a good idea to have a good checkup on your vehicle. Thus, before setting off on your next adventure,. Tyresafe is always the first to offer some good and sensible advice. Especially when it comes to the tyres and tyre safety.

Caravan Tyre safety Advice

Tyresafe takes its responsibility very seriously. Excellent articles and videos are always available to support this responsibility. This video is no exception to the rule. Consequently, as the owner of my own tyre retail depot,. Then, I have the greatest admiration for the non-profit-making organisation.

In general, caravan and motorhome owners show a responsible attitude towards their vehicles.

As a result, we see our customers having their vehicles checked year after year. Indeed, it was only the other Saturday that a guy brought in two of his caravan wheels for us to check over.

The guy owned one of the larger units. Caravan tyre safety Advice

Hence, that was a four-wheel unit. Therefore, he brought the wheels to us in pairs. On close examination, the tyres were showing signs of cracking. This is due to exposure to the sun. Thus, at the first signs of any cracking,. Then the tyre must be changed.

For maximum safety,

winter tyres should be fitted to all four wheels. However, it is possible to fit them on your drive wheels only. Drivers can’t always afford to buy a set of four tyres, so two winter tyres is better than none.

Mixing summer and winter tyres could result at either end of your car sliding, or spinning causing you to lose control. This is unlikely but it could happen in unfortunate circumstances. The wrong time and the wrong place.

This year, I fitted winter tyres to my car

before the bad weather hit. The difference when driving in snow is incredible compared to summer tyres. Drivers have raved about the safety and effectiveness of their winter tyres in snowy conditions.

Effectiveness-Winter Tyres

Because the temperature only has to fall below 7 degrees, winter tyres are more efficient the summer tyres. Winter tyres should go onto your car from November to March. Consequently,  the whole of the UK should be fitted with winter tyres.  Furthermore, there would be fewer accidents and travel chaos. This chaos happens every time it snows on the motorways and hilly areas.

Effectiveness-Winter Tyres

Winter tyres are not illegal to use on British roads. Indeed, we are one of the few European countries where fitting winter tyres is not a legal requirement.

There are many excellent brands of tyres available in winter patterns. Different tyre retailers sell different products. Take it from me, they are all worth fitting  for your safety. The video shows just how effective these tyres are in bad conditions.

We are here at Pellon Tyres in Halifax,

Yorkshire, UK, fits thousands of winter tyres every winter. We sell most brands of tyres. Finally, we recommend that you bring down the cost by fitting mid-range winter tyres. Brands that we recommend are Vredestein, Falken and Jinyu.

Winter Tyres versus 4×4

Winter tyres are going to be on a lot of minds of many motorists this year – It is always possible that Great Britain could face a particularly harsh winter this year. It is possible that we could have snow falling from as early as November. Motorists who have bought a four-wheel drive car,  probably think that they are  properly prepared – but are they?

AutoExpress went up to Tamworth Snowdome.

This was  to find out if a front-wheel drive car with winter tyres has more traction in the snow than a 4×4 with summer tyres fitted. They used two Ford Kuga cars, both with 2.0-litre diesel engines and manual gearboxes. But one is front-wheel drive and the other is all-wheel drive. The 4×4 Ford Kuga costs £1,500 more than the normal model.

I am always telling my customers

that in snowy conditions, the rubber in summer tyres gets harder and does not grip very well. Winter tyres use a softer compound and a tread pattern that’s designed to pick up snow and dissipate it, improving grip in these wintery conditions.

In their first test

we saw that the front-wheel-drive car on summer tyres was hopeless in the snow.  However, when fitted with winter tyres, the car did much better. Furthermore, they also tested the 4×4 on summer tyres, and the results were very surprising.

With the winter tyres fitted, the normal Kuga went 110 metres up the slope, While the 4×4 car only made it 13 metres up, before sliding back down 9 metres. In the end, it ended up no further than the standard did with summer tyres.

Winter Tyres versus 4×4

They also tested the four-wheel drive Ford Kuga. This was fitted with winter tyres. As a result, the difference was astonishing. There was plenty of grip and the car drove all the way to the top of the steep ski slope, without any real effort.

Obviously, the best solution for driving on snow is to have a 4×4 fitted with  winter tyres . It was proven that without the correct tyres fitted, a 4×4 is just as useless in snow and ice as the average two-wheel-drive car. We recommend using General Grabber AT2 Tyres for your SUV or 4X4.

When November arrives and with winter approaching it will be time to think about switching to Winter Tyres for your Mercedes-Benz . This excellent video shows just how much difference Mercedes-Benz Winter Tyres can make, up to 50% reduced braking distance on snow. Winter tyres are made with a higher percentage of natural rubber meaning they remain more supple at temperatures below 7º C.

When fitting your Mercedes winter tyres then there is doubt and a sensible thing to do.

Most noteworthy, it has been proven many times over, that fitting Apollo Winters, will be a wise thing to do. Especially just before the onset of winter. Furthermore, by fitting winter tyres before the onset of winter, will help you get from A to B without too many problems.

This means that your Mercedes car will cope with most things that the inclement weather could throw at it. However, you will have to be careful in a really bad blizzard.  You will drive safer, even in the worse of snow. and in some conditions even with winter tyres fitted to your car, then you should still drive with care, do not get

You must appreciate that total care must be taken. In some extreme conditions even with winter tyres fitted to your car. Consequently,  you should still drive with care.  Your winter tyres will give you the grip that you need, but do not get over confident.

You should still drive your Mercedes car

with care in snowy winter conditions, even with snow tyres fitted. They are not a license to be reckless. Here at Pellon Tyres in Halifax UK, we do sell thousands of winter tyres to our customers. We recommend that they fit Falken winter tyres and goodyear winter tyres.

WINTERS COMPARED TO SUMMER Types: Winters Tyres Compared to Summers

Winter tyres versus Summer tyres; We take you on a journey of discovery to understand the difference between winter and summer tyres in all road usage conditions. Michelin, in my opinion, are the world leaders in tyre design and development. They are experts in compounds and know exactly what the car market is looking for in tyre technology.

Falken Winters is worth a look at: Winters Tyres Compared to Summers

So another good recommendation is for busy drivers to fit Falken winter tyres. Falken are a well-known world beater when it comes to winter tyres. Importantly, Falken also makes decent summer tyre. Subsequently, the summers are worth considering when summer tyres are what you want.

Which Tyres Are Better for Your Car This Winter:

Winter or Summer?

It’s that time of year again in Halifax, when the leaves begin to fall and the temperature drops, and drivers begin to wonder if they should change to winter tyres. It’s a reasonable question, particularly in light of the unpredictability of British winters, which can surprise us with chilly mornings and, if we’re lucky, a good deal of snowfall.

You may be considering if making the transfer is worthwhile right now. Ultimately, summer tyres have carried you from Scarborough Fair to the final moments of an impish Indian summer. Here’s the skinny on why winter tyres can be your greatest friend in the winter.

The Specifics of Winter Tyres

Let’s talk about what makes winter tyres unique first things first. It’s not just about the tread patterns—which are more complex and profound than those of their summer relatives, incidentally. These designs effectively penetrate snow and mud, providing more control and lowering the possibility of slipping.

But it’s the rubber that has the true magic. Winter tyres are composed of a softer rubber compound that maintains its flexibility in low temperatures. Because of its flexibility, the tyre can better adhere to the surface of the road, increasing traction. The contrast between running across a frozen Halifax Moor in your sneakers and a quality pair of winter boots is exactly what we’re talking about!

Sun Seekers: Summer Tyres

Onto the summer tyres now. These are the typical suspects you’ll see on your wheels in the summertime. They provide a greater grip on both dry and wet roads throughout the warmer months since they are made of a tougher rubber compound that can withstand higher temperatures. Additionally, they feature a less complex tread design that lowers rolling resistance and may increase the fuel efficiency of your vehicle.

However, summer tyres may lose some of their effectiveness as the temperature decreases. Just like a Yorkshire pudding that’s left out too long after Sunday dinner, the tougher rubber can get overly stiff and lose its ability to grip the road when you need it most.

What’s the verdict, then? Winters Tyres Compared to Summers

With some cautious driving, you could manage with summer tyres if you’re usually driving around town in mild winter weather. But as soon as the temperature routinely falls below 7°C, it’s time to convert to winter tyres for piece of mind and safer winter driving. And never forget that Halifax doesn’t have tropical winters!

Halifax and the Pennines: A Regional Perspective

Remembering the local context is important since driving in Halifax or across the Pennines in the winter can be challenging. There can be significant snowfall and slippery conditions on the rural routes and higher elevations. Winter tyres are an essential component of your winter driving equipment, not just a suggestion.

Plus, changing tyres is a simple task. Your summer tyres can be stored at home, or you can trust your neighbourhood garage—like ours at Halifax Garage Business—to take care of them. Along with extending the life of your summer tyres, it also makes sure you’re prepared for any weather conditions the Pennines may bring.

Final Thoughts– Winters Tyres Compared to Summers
In conclusion, winter tyres are the unsung heroes of the colder months, while summer tyres perform admirably from spring through October. When the driving conditions resemble a scene from “Wuthering Heights” (foggy, damp, and slightly dramatic), they offer the extra grip and safety that are required.

This winter, drive carefully. If you have any questions regarding the right tyres for your car, visit your neighbourhood garage. No matter the season, we’re always available to chat about how to maintain your motor performing at its peak. Drive carefully and stay warm!

Customers are getting their cars ready by fitting Michelin winter tyres. Of course this is a great safety precaution. Halifax is a very hilly area and so winter tyres can be a must for people living in difficult hilly positions.

Of course, we do recommend Falken winter tyres. However, any brand will help drivers out of a sticky situation.

“Why a ‘Tyre Hotel’ in Halifax is the Smart Choice for Seasonal Tyre Swaps”

As the leaves begin to change colour and the temperature begins to drop in Halifax, it serves as a timely reminder to us motorists that it is time to start thinking about tyres, more specifically, the process of replacing our summer tyres with winter tyres.

On the other hand, what do you do with the set that you are not doing?

It is at this point that a “Tyre Hotel” comes into play; this is not just a fancy name; rather, it is a clever solution to the problems you are experiencing with your tyres. The reason that this service, in particular at Pellon Tyre in Halifax, is a bit of a game-changer is going to be discussed in more detail.

To begin, let’s have a conversation about the reasons why you might even need to change your tyres. You have to understand that summer tyres and winter tyres are comparable to fish and chips.

They are both excellent. Worn Dunlop winter tyres

but they are best suited to various kinds of weather. Summer tyres are the type of tyres that are designed to be used in warmer weather. They have a unique tread pattern and a rubber composition that are most effective when the weather is not particularly harsh.

The roads are as slippery as a bag of eels during the winter months; therefore, you need tyres that are able to grip better in the cold and wet. Winter tyres are the answer to this problem.

However, here is the catch: Worn Dunlop winter tyres

Where do you store the set that you are not currently using? It is not possible for the majority of us to have the luxury of a large shed or garage.

When this occurs, it makes a great deal of sense to make use of a “Tyre Hotel,” which is a storage service for your off-season tyres. Further, it is not only a matter of space.

In fact, if you store your tyres correctly,

You can actually extend their lifespan. In order to prevent them from deteriorating, it is necessary to store them in a location that is cold, dry, and dark.

Within the city of Halifax, there is a local company called Pellon Tyre that provides just this kind of service. The experience is comparable to checking your tyres into a five-star hotel, with the exception of the spa and room service, at least.

They are going to store your tyres in the best possible condition

which means that when you switch them back, they will be in excellent condition, just like they were when you left them.

The question that I hear you ask is, “But wait, isn’t this just an additional expense?” Not quite, to be sure. Imagine that you are making a smart investment.

Because you are storing your tyres in the appropriate manner, you will end up saving money in the long run. It is possible for tyres to break, lose pressure, or even alter shape if they are not stored properly.

That would require you to spend money on new tyres earlier

than you would normally have to. Additionally, if you have your tyres stored in a secure location, you won’t have to worry about stumbling over them every time you go into the garage or the shed.

And let’s not overlook the fact that it is easily accessible. It is simple to visit Pellon Tyre whenever it is necessary to replace your tyres.

To put it another way, Worn Dunlop winter tyres

You won’t have to waste time at home trying to figure out which tyre should go where. In addition, these individuals are knowledgeable in their field; they will examine your tyres for any signs of wear and tear and ensure that they are safe to use.

To add a touch of regional flavour, Halifax is not only a town that has a long and illustrious history, but it is also a location that encounters a wide variety of weather conditions during the course of the year.

You put your tyres through a lot of wear and tear

from the heat of the summer sun at Shibden Park to the cold of the winter in the wool shops. Therefore, it is reasonable to provide them with the care that they merit.

In conclusion, taking advantage of a ‘Tyre Hotel’ service such as the one that Pellon Tyre in Halifax provides is not limited to simply clearing out the clutter in your garage. You will be able to save money, maintain your peace of mind, and extend the life of your tyres if you make this decision.

You might not need it every day. Worn Dunlop winter tyres

but when you do, you will be glad that you have it. It is similar to keeping a reliable umbrella in your trunk; you might not use it every day. Therefore, the next time you are changing your tyres, you might want to think about giving them a vacation of their own. They have truly deserved it, don’t you think?

Driving in light to medium winter road conditions to test the capabilities of Dunlop Winter Sport 3D tyres. There is still about 3mm of sips and a further 2-3mm of tyre depth beyond that marker on the front tyres after over a year of driving. An excess of 10,000 miles has been covered in that time.

This road test is one of the best ones that I have seen.

It shows the benefits of fitting winter tyres, which, when changed in November, can last for three or four years.

Here at Pellon Tyres in Halifax, UK, we operate a tyre hotel. This was an experiment by our boss, Eric Roberts, about five years ago. We had heard about this operation operating in the Nordic countries. I thought that it could work in the UK, and so I gave it a go.

It has been so successful

that we are completely full at the moment, but we are creating some more space for the future. Customers can have their summer and winter tyres exchanged at the correct times, and we will do all the work for them.

Our customers will then get full use of their winter tyres, right down to the last millimetre. This video shows that even worn-out winter tyres are worth using.

Firstly, we compared

My own opinion is that the tougher the climate where you live, the tougher the type of tyres that you should fit. Also, the further north that you drive, the colder it usually is. Therefore, you should fit the winter tyres.

Why All-Weather Tyres Are a Great Option for the Varied Weather in the UK

As anyone who has ever experienced an unexpected shower or driven into the morning frost on your car before leaving for work will attest, British weather can be as capricious as an unexpected turn of events in an EastEnders episode. This is where all-weather tyres’ magic becomes useful. They are prepared for any situation that the sky may bring, much like the reliable umbrella that is always in your boot.

The ideal compromise between summer and winter tyres is the Jack-of-All-Trades tyre. They are made to withstand the moderate, frequently rainy, and icy weather that is typical of most of the United Kingdom. These tyres last through thick and thin, from the gentle spring showers in Devon to the crisp autumn breezes in Scotland, so you don’t need to replace them twice a year.

Safety comes first, rain or shine.

One of the main selling points of all-weather tyres is safety. On both wet and dry roads, their distinctive tread pattern and rubber compounds offer exceptional grip and handling. These tyres lessen the chance of skidding when it rains and the roads in Halifax become slick. Furthermore, you’ll be ready and won’t have to scramble to change your tyres at the last minute when winter finally decides to bite off with some snow or ice.

Economical and Practical

Think about the expense and inconvenience of replacing your tyres every season. Maintaining a single set of tyres throughout the year reduces the number of extra trips to the garage and the amount of space required for storing an additional set of tyres. This can save you a good deal of money and hassle over time.

ideal for the United Kingdom Temperature

All-season tyres are a great option because the UK isn’t known for experiencing extreme weather, such as the deep winter in Finland or the intense heat of an Australian summer. They are durable enough for a chilly morning, but on those infrequent warm days, they won’t break down too soon.

A Tribute to the Community

All-weather tyres ensure that those of us who live in or around Halifax, or anywhere else in the UK, are always prepared to take the road, whether it’s for a vacation to the coast or a drive through the breathtaking Yorkshire dales. No matter the season, you’re always ready for an impromptu weekend getaway with these tyres.

All-weather tyres are therefore your best option for a safe and pleasant ride, whether you’re heading out for a quick shop in town or organising a road trip to see the historic sites across the nation. Visit your neighbourhood garage and discuss the benefits of upgrading to all-weather tyres. Both your car and your peace of mind will appreciate it!

I think that all-weather tyres will be the best option. These tyres are excellent in heavy rain storms, snow, or sleet showers. If you live in a mountainous area, then snow tyres will be the order of the day.

We are in a similar position here in Halifax in the UK. Some winters we experience heavy snow and other winters practically no snow at all. To be on the safe side we do recommend that our clients fit winter tyres in November at the beginning of the winter driving period.

There is no doubt that all-weather tyres

are getting more and more popular. In my opinion, many parts of the UK would be better fitted with all-weather tyres. Flat areas, such as Lincolnshire, would not require winter tyres. All-weather tyres would be a much better option due to the long road stretches that lead to a sharp bend.

All-weather tyres would cope

much better in really wet winter weather than standard summer tyres.
